My name is Owen Collinson and I am a multi-generational farmer on my families farm. I have been attending 4H meetings since before I can remember. This is my 2nd year showing lambs however I was able to still have a lot of new experiences this season.
My lamb journey started a little differently with Smokey then it normally would. On Jan 18, 2024 my mom got a phone call that a friend of hers had lambs that needed to be bottle fed and picked up immediately, so we got in the car and decided to bring home 2 one for me and one for my sister Ellie. Of course, my mom being my mom didn't check with my step dad first so boy was he in for a surprise when we got home with two little babies that needed to come inside to stay warm and be bottle fed, but that's a different story see me at the fair and I'll tell you all about it...
Bottle feeding a baby was an experience, my sister and I worked in shifts sharing the middle of the night and early morning feedings and my mom helped us some to when we would be really tired. They looked at us as their moms and would follow us around the yard and play with us. This made training and working with them to prepare for the fair very easy since they wanted to be with us already and never had the fear of being taken to a new place to navigate with them.
When it came time to teach Smokey to eat solid food other than a bottle that was a little challenging, I learned how much of these are habits they pick up from watching their mom do it. I tried to get my sister to demonstrate eating grass but she didn't last long doing that. So instead we had to take time to show them how to eat grass, grain, and hay. They were given constant access to food and were able to creep feed so they would gain interest. I even would put milk powder on the grain so it would smell the same to encourage them to eat it. Once Smokey figured out how to eat their was no stopping him, he has been known to be found with a bucket on his head a time or two.
I picked Smokey as his name since I have 2 market lambs that are Smokey and Bandit based after the movie Smokey and the Bandit, this is my Poppy's favorite movie that we watch together so I wanted to name them after something that was meaningful.
Smokey has taught me a lot about carrying for another being and being the "adult" that a child looks up to, to learn from, get guidance from, and who feeds him. If given the opportunity I would raise another bottle baby in the future.
Thank you for reading about Smokey and considering him for your purchase for the auction. Just know he was well loved and cared for which will make his meat taste even better, a happy lamb is a tasty lamb!
