Hello, my name is Alexandra, but I like Alex, and I am a member of the Harwood 4H club in Southern Anne Arundel County.  I am a 5th grade student at Lothian Elementary School, and this is my second year in 4H.

For the 2025 Fair, I am excited to introduce my striped steer, Ralph.  Ralph is not your typical show steer, from a show barn, his story is a little different...

In April 2024, my parents saw an ad on Craigslist for a bottle calf in VA, his mother had died, and no one had time to bottle raise a bull calf, the farm wanted him gone right away.  We drove 3 hours to find a small, lonely baby, only a few weeks old, and immediately brought him home.  He looked like a shaggy, Highland/Angus calf but was covered in stripes.  Just like the pictures online, Highland calves are adorable.

Over the next few months, I bottle raised baby Ralph on milk replacer and goat milk from my grandmother.   We kept him with our sheep so he wouldn't be alone until his brother from another mother, Stanley, arrived.  You can read about Stanley on my sister's page.  While a huge amount of time is spent bottle feeding a calf, training a bottle baby has huge perks, he already likes people.

For the next year and a half, I worked with Ralph.  He never minded a halter but boy was he stubborn, teaching him to walk was a feat.  It took time to figure out, just like people, each animal is different, and you have to tailor your training to the individual animal needs.  Ralph wasn't raised with a mom, he did whatever he wanted in the field, including doing what he wanted during training.  Training him took extra time but we were able to work together and now he is fair ready!

I hope you will come visit me and Ralph at the fair and consider bidding on him come auction night.  By supporting me in this auction, you are not only purchasing quality, locally raised beef but also investing in the future of agriculture in South County.

Just look for the only striped cow at the fair!

Alex
