Hi my name is Bailey Mistretta, I am a member of Ausaymas 4H. This is my 3rd year in the Swine Project.  My gilts name is Dixie, I purchased Dixie from Powerhouse Farms in Los Banos, California.  When I picked up Dixie she weighed 58 pounds.  She steadily gained weight every week.  Dixie is the first pig I have had that was not a picky eater, I quickly learned she loved her food wet and sloppy.  Dixie sure is a messy eater and never hesitated to dive into her feed.

The biggest challenge I had with this project was the crazy heat waves we had. I would take ice to Dixie to help her cool down, she loved playing with the ice cubes and ice blocks.  We also installed misters to keep her cool during those very hot days.  She was also stubborn when it came to walking and always wanted to lead the way.  I continued to work with her everyday walking her on the whip.  She usually seemed more interested in chewing on the whip than walking on it but she came around. She also loved to follow me around the farm to see what I was doing. When I get to the farm I call out her name and she always jumps up to meet me at her stall gate.

Dixie has been my favorite pig out of the 3 pigs I have raised. Dixie is considered the farm sweetheart.  Everyone stops by to say hi to her and get some Dixie love.

I hope you have enjoyed learning a little about her.  I know these are tough times with COVID, your support now more than ever means so much. Without the support of generous buyers like you my projects would not be possible! Thank you!!

I also want to thank my family, friends, breeder and club leader for their support with this project.

The San Benito County Fair Junior Livestock Auction is the culmination of a long summer spent raising the best quality food for your purchase. Through these projects, exhibitors learn many lifelong skills in budgeting for purchase of their animal, feed, supplies and veterinary care. They spend many hours caring for and feeding their animal to keep it growing efficiently and they raise it in a healthy, clean and safe environment. The Auction, as in any production Agriculture program, is the time to bring the best product to market. Each of these exhibitors took a chance in very trying times and dedicated their summer to learning and raising livestock to provide a safe, nutritious food product to consumers. We are proud of them and wish them success in the sale of their project and know that they represent the Animal Agriculture industry well. We are grateful to you, our buyers, for your continued support of the youth in our community in a difficult year and we appreciate your flexibility in changing to a format that is new to most of us. Thank you and we hope you have a fun successful sale and fill your freezer with quality meat.
