Raising Broilers as a 4-H Project
Hello, name is Briley Peters, and I am raising broilers for the first time as my first ever 4-H Project. I received the broiler chicks on February 11, 2022. Prior to picking up the chicks, we had to build a brooder box that we then converted to a coop with all the needed heating lamps to maintain the proper temperatures through the production process. I also had to research a food program and find a feed store that could help with the needed plan and make sure it was in stock. This poultry project has taught me a lot about all the steps that have to be followed through the growing period to produce a show quality broiler. When we collected the chickens, we had to make sure each broiler had a wing band. During the first five days, I had to keep the water at 80°F. Three days before receiving the broilers, me and my dad had to heat the coop. We have one water container for every fifteen broilers. To be safe we have three watering units in total. We have two hanging and two trough style feeders in the coop for the birds. There is a layer of pine shavings throughout the coop floor. Through the first week we keep the house at 90°F. We have feed the 100 present Purina brand Honor Show Poultry Stater for the first week and then we continued an Honor Show feed program from there. At the beginning we made 2 batches of feed and then four batches the next week. We are now up to six batches per week. At week three and five we have changed the pine shavings.
