My name is Rhaleigh Cox and I am a freshman at Silsbee High School. This is my second year as an active member of the school's FFA program raising and showing goats.
My junior market goat placed third in class at YMBL against some very tough competition.
I purchased this year's project animal from Contos Livestock in Cleveland, Texas. He was a very young goat when we brought him home in August. I named him Spangle as a show of patriotism and honor to the Star Spangled Banner.
I had a hard time getting Spangle to eat enough when we first brought him home. This was due to the stress of being separated from his mother and put into a new environment. But after getting him on a good diet plan and worming him regularly, he finally began to grow.
Taking care of such a young goat during the very cold winter storm we had was the most challenging.
I have been very pleased with his good health and especially his muscle growth over the past two months. I have learned that slow and steady best describes how to grow great show animals.
